Walking Across a Continent: What 6,000 Kilometers Taught Franck Benhamou About Life

In this episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Franck Benhamou, a man who did something most of us would never even dare to imagine. He walked nearly 6,000 kilometers across Europe.

Not by bike. Not by car. Not with a support team.
Step by step. On foot.

His journey began in Tallinn, Estonia, in the far north of Europe. From there, he crossed country after country, experiencing landscapes, cultures, and people in a way that only walking can allow. He eventually made his way through Portugal, traveling from the very north all the way down to the south, before finishing his incredible adventure in Tarifa, Spain, the southernmost point of Europe.

What struck me most during our conversation was not just the physical feat, although that alone is extraordinary, but the deeper reasons behind it.

Why would someone choose to walk across an entire continent?

For Franck, this journey was not about setting a record or proving something to others. It was about slowing down, reconnecting with life, and discovering what really matters when you strip everything back to the essentials.

When you walk for months with only what you can carry, life becomes very simple. You focus on food, shelter, rest, and the next step. The noise of modern life fades away, and something else emerges: clarity.

The people he met along the way

One of the most beautiful parts of his story is the kindness he encountered.

Again and again, strangers opened their doors, shared meals, offered help, and showed generosity without expecting anything in return. Franck spoke about how this journey restored his faith in humanity. It reminded him that beneath all our differences, people are fundamentally good and deeply connected.

The physical transformation

Of course, walking thousands of kilometers also changed him physically.

He experienced significant weight loss, improved fitness, and incredible endurance. But beyond the physical transformation was something even more powerful: mental resilience. Walking day after day teaches you patience, discipline, and the ability to keep going even when conditions are difficult.

The biggest challenges

It was not always easy.

There were moments of exhaustion, loneliness, unpredictable weather, and logistical challenges. Organizing such a massive journey required planning, adaptability, and constant problem solving.

Yet those very challenges became some of the greatest teachers. They forced him to grow, to trust himself, and to find strength he did not know he had.

What walking taught him about life

Perhaps the most profound lessons were the simplest ones.

Walking taught Franck to slow down. To appreciate small moments. To live in the present instead of constantly rushing toward the next goal. It helped him rediscover what truly matters: connection, simplicity, purpose, and being fully alive in each step.

His story is a powerful reminder that adventure does not always require exotic destinations or extreme resources. Sometimes, it begins with a decision to take one step, then another, and to keep going.

How to Break a Water Fast

As always there's quite a bit of conflicting information out there about how to break a fast. One thing everyone agrees on is that the fast needs to broken slowly and gently. You also need several days to go back to eating normally. For example, if you do a 7 day fast, you need about 3 days of refeeding. On a 10 day fast, you'll need 4-5 days and so on. How you break the fast will make or break the whole experience. If you go right back to your old way of eating, you can easily negate all the benefits of your fast. One school of thought insists on breaking the fast with fruit, more specifically watermelon and then lots of veggies and more fruit. Since my goal is to remain in ketosis, I will be taking a different approach. I will be eating protein, fat and some low-carb veggies, bone broth and lots of water. I would also recommend abstaining from alcohol for at least a few days so you're not overburdening your liver. Listen to your body. Don't force the food if yo...

240 Hour Water Fast Completed

That's 10 whole days for those of you who are bad at math. :) Wow, what an accomplishment. I can't believe that I had the willpower to stick to this. How did I know it was time to break the fast? Hunger returned with a vengeance last night. Also, weight loss has really slowed down in the last couple of days. I guess my body was running out of things to munch on. Well, I could still think of a few places but we have to trust the system. I woke up this morning very excited and started with some kefir to replenish some of the intestinal bacteria before my first meal. I'm now enjoying a nice cup of matcha tea with extra cream and a bit of bone broth protein (I swear it tastes like hot chocolate, yum!) and thinking about what my first proper meal will be. I still have some broth left so I was thinking of perhaps making some cream of mushroom soup and pretty much sticking to liquids today but the day is still young. Will keep you guys posted.
