Welcome to The Aging Games, Today I'll be talking about lumen metabolism tracker and how it helps me to Biohack my metabolism.
I'm a total nerd when it comes to biohacking. Also a bit obsessive when it comes to diet, exercise and hacking my metabolism.
About a month ago I started fasting again so this could not have come at a better time. My Lumen finally arrived. I've been using keto meters and blood sugar monitors for years but this will take hacking to a whole new level.
Lumen claims to be the first device to hack your metabolism. By analyzing your metabolic activity from your breath, it gives you personalized dietary recommendations to help your body effectively shift between utilizing fats or carbohydrates as a source of energy.
In this way, you can lead a healthier lifestyle and perform better at your workouts according to your own body’s metabolism.
Lumen uses a CO2 sensor and flow meter to determine the CO2 concentration in a single breath. This indicates the type of fuel your body is using to produce energy.
Lumen uses RER as the core data point to bring the same measurement to a home environment by measuring the CO2 in your breath through the sensor and flow meter, based on the RER metric.
Until now, such an RER test could only be performed in clinics and was expensive but Lumen bring such a test in your pocket to output results within minutes.
By following the meal plans, Lumen aims to improve your metabolic flexibility, which it describes as “the ability of the human body to switch back and forth between fat and carbohydrates based on their availability. Developing a more flexible metabolism helps you switch between metabolizing carbs and fats effectively so as to achieve your dietary goals.
It can improve your insulin sensitivity, stabilize your blood glucose level and burn more fat for energy. It’s a delicate balance that’s achievable through proper management of one’s diet, lifestyle and workouts to lead to an overall better health.
All things considered, the Lumen by itself does not hack your metabolism. Rather, it tracks it, while it’s up to you to do the hacking. Nevertheless, as far as a personal, accessible and digital nutritionist goes, the Lumen does a fine job and delivers quite a unique experience.
As always there's quite a bit of conflicting information out there about how to break a fast. One thing everyone agrees on is that the fast needs to broken slowly and gently. You also need several days to go back to eating normally. For example, if you do a 7 day fast, you need about 3 days of refeeding. On a 10 day fast, you'll need 4-5 days and so on. How you break the fast will make or break the whole experience. If you go right back to your old way of eating, you can easily negate all the benefits of your fast. One school of thought insists on breaking the fast with fruit, more specifically watermelon and then lots of veggies and more fruit. Since my goal is to remain in ketosis, I will be taking a different approach. I will be eating protein, fat and some low-carb veggies, bone broth and lots of water.
