Osteoarthritis Recovery and Double Hip Surgery with Zora Benhamou

How Zora Benhamou Rebuilt Her Body After Osteoarthritis and Double Hip Replacement

Osteoarthritis is often presented as an inevitable part of aging. A slow decline. A one-way road toward pain, stiffness, and eventually surgery. But in this inspiring episode of The Aging Games Podcast, I sit down with Zora Benhamou, founder of HackMyAge.com and host of the Hack My Age Podcast, to challenge that narrative in a very real and honest way.

Zora’s story is not about avoiding surgery at all costs. It is about doing everything in your power to understand your body, support it intelligently, and make informed decisions without fear or shame.

Diagnosed Young and Facing the Odds

Zora was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in her early 40s. Far earlier than most people expect. On paper, she checked nearly every risk factor. Joint degeneration. Chronic pain. Loss of mobility. What followed was a two-year journey of experimentation, persistence, and deep self-education.

Like many people in the biohacking and natural health space, Zora explored every non-surgical option available to her. PRP. Stem cell patches. Supplements. Acupuncture. Massage. Lifestyle therapies. Some helped. Some did not. And some revealed important truths about what actually moves the needle when it comes to joint health.

When Biohacking Is Not Enough

One of the most refreshing parts of this conversation is Zora’s honesty.

Despite her dedication and willingness to try everything, her hips continued to deteriorate. Eventually, she made the decision to undergo a double hip replacement in Spain, with surgeries just three months apart.

Not as a failure.
Not as giving up.
But as a strategic decision rooted in self-respect and long-term quality of life.

This episode is a powerful reminder that natural health and modern medicine are not enemies. When used together wisely, they can be profoundly effective.

What Really Causes Osteoarthritis

Zora breaks down what osteoarthritis actually is, who is most at risk, and why the condition is often misunderstood. She explains how biomechanics, inflammation, hormones, stress, and movement patterns all play a role.

Most importantly, she highlights why waiting until pain becomes unbearable is one of the biggest mistakes people make.

Early intervention matters. Awareness matters. And understanding your personal risk profile can change everything.

Preparing the Body for Surgery Naturally

Where Zora’s story truly shines is in how she approached surgery preparation and recovery.

Instead of viewing surgery as something that happens to you, she treated it as a collaboration with her body.

In this conversation, we explore:

  • How to prepare your body nutritionally and metabolically before surgery

  • Why muscle, fascia, and nervous system health matter more than people realize

  • What actually helps speed recovery and what is mostly hype

  • How to rebuild strength and confidence without rushing the process

Her recovery was not just physical. It was emotional. Mental. And deeply empowering.

The Mindset That Changes Everything

Perhaps the most valuable takeaway from this episode is Zora’s mindset.

She refused to let a diagnosis define her future.
She stayed curious instead of fearful.
She listened to her body instead of fighting it.

That mindset, paired with daily habits and consistency, allowed her to come back stronger, more mobile, and more confident than she had been in years.

A Message of Real Hope

If you are dealing with joint pain, osteoarthritis, or are facing surgery, this episode offers something rare. Real hope without false promises.

Not a miracle cure.
Not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
But a grounded, intelligent conversation about resilience, informed choice, and rebuilding from the inside out.

Zora’s journey reminds us that aging does not mean surrendering our bodies. It means learning how to work with them in smarter, kinder ways.

How to Break a Water Fast

As always there's quite a bit of conflicting information out there about how to break a fast. One thing everyone agrees on is that the fast needs to broken slowly and gently. You also need several days to go back to eating normally. For example, if you do a 7 day fast, you need about 3 days of refeeding. On a 10 day fast, you'll need 4-5 days and so on. How you break the fast will make or break the whole experience. If you go right back to your old way of eating, you can easily negate all the benefits of your fast. One school of thought insists on breaking the fast with fruit, more specifically watermelon and then lots of veggies and more fruit. Since my goal is to remain in ketosis, I will be taking a different approach. I will be eating protein, fat and some low-carb veggies, bone broth and lots of water. I would also recommend abstaining from alcohol for at least a few days so you're not overburdening your liver. Listen to your body. Don't force the food if yo...

4 Months Later - Fasting - Carnivore - OMAD

I know it's been a while since I've done an update. So here we are at the beginning of September already. Things are progressing really nicely. So much better than I ever imagined. I've slowly transitioned to a mostly Carnivore diet , consisting or meat, eggs and dairy with very little veggies and no fruit. I've continued fasting on a regular basis. Basically having just one meal a day on most days (OMAD) and then still doing regular water fasts as I feel the need. My weight continued to decrease slowly but very steadily. I wasn't expecting this at all. I would have been very happy just maintaining my weight under 70kg and here I am at 62kg. How cool is that? Yeah, I'm sure excited.  Here's my latest before and after pic. Hopefully you guys can see the difference. I can tell you that I feel so amazing! I've had to buy a whole new wardrobe. I know, the horror, eh? I've stopped taking all my supplements. My eczema is a thing of the past. My Has...

240 Hour Water Fast Completed

That's 10 whole days for those of you who are bad at math. :) Wow, what an accomplishment. I can't believe that I had the willpower to stick to this. How did I know it was time to break the fast? Hunger returned with a vengeance last night. Also, weight loss has really slowed down in the last couple of days. I guess my body was running out of things to munch on. Well, I could still think of a few places but we have to trust the system. I woke up this morning very excited and started with some kefir to replenish some of the intestinal bacteria before my first meal. I'm now enjoying a nice cup of matcha tea with extra cream and a bit of bone broth protein (I swear it tastes like hot chocolate, yum!) and thinking about what my first proper meal will be. I still have some broth left so I was thinking of perhaps making some cream of mushroom soup and pretty much sticking to liquids today but the day is still young. Will keep you guys posted.
